Back in 1996 some friends and myself travelled to Ukraine to watch as many old Soviet planes as we could. This report was published in a Dutch Aviation Magazine and on my website afterwards. I never finished translating it in English, which is why is switches to Dutch halfways. I will add some more pictures later, as well as finshing the translation.

After leaving Utrecht at 5 PM to pick up Rick, we made the first stop in Apeldoorn at Alex’ parents for the last decent meal (Lasagne á la Hamelink) after which we drove to Praha in one go, where we found the first plane of this trip, a Su.7.

Because we had to cross the city center on the quest for the 3 MiG.15s at Holesovice, we got a good look at the huge statue of mister Jackson and all of the rest of the city center because of all the roadblocks.

At Vodochody there were at least five Let.39s with a yellow star in a red circle. At home we found out that this means Vietnamese Air Force. Unfortunately we got kicked away here, so that we didn’t manage to read any serials.

After the airshow we thought it would be a good idea to actually find out what caused the water in the carburator. It turned out out there was a hole in the gastank which we repaired with a piece of tape.
We crossed the border in a relatively short time and then we scored the first aircraft inside the Ukraine, at Uzhgorod.

At the Antonov factory at Gostomel there was a Dmitri who didn’t mind guiding us around the airfield “without any problem……but it’s impossible” but we did need a letter from the chief-designer of Antonov. He even tried to reach the chief by phone, bur it didn’t work out.

After starting this day off by finishing Zhulyani we went to search for Sviatoshino where the other Antonov facility should be. We’ll probably never know. On the way to Bila Cherkva we found an An.2 on a grass-strip.

When we were almost finished spotting all the bombers in store here, a small fighter cam overshooting. We thought it’d be a MiG.29 from the nearby base of Vasilkov. When it turned around to land it turned out to be a Su.15. Quite a nice surprise I must say.

Deze dag begonnen we met de constatering dat er op Pyriatin geen vliegtuigen
meer staan, dat Mirgorod onvindbaar bleek en dat we zodoende om 11.30 uur nog
geen vliegtuig hadden gezien. Poltava wist onze humeuren (en met name dat van
Hans) weer wat op te beuren met 14 Tu.22M3-en.

Kharkov bleek geen onaardige stad te zijn, de vliegvelden waren wel leuk maar
niet echt schokkend. Die avond nog doorgereden naar Chuguyev waar we eerst nog
een MiG.21 op een paal tegen kwamen en daarna maar eens zelf aan het koken
geslagen, zelf meegebrachte erwtensoep met brood (niet zelf meegenomen) is in
ieder geval weer eens wat anders dan shaslick van de BBQ.

Na ‘s ochtends even een bandje te hebben verwisseld ons staan vergapen aan
een Libische MiG.23 die hier, op Chugeyev, stond te wachten op destructie. Een
bezoekje was ook hier zonder dokumenta niet mogelijk.

De band die die ochtend lek was gegaan wilden we bij Iziom laten repareren
maar de buitenband was zo gaar dat die vervangen moest worden, en dat is zelfs
in de Ukraïne best duur, 70 hriven.Het volgende reisdoel was Kramatorsk, waar we
eigenlijk verwacht hadden onze eerste Su.15’s te scoren. Bij de terminal werden
we opgewacht door een meneer die ons direct vroeg wat we wilden. Desgevraagd
vertelde hij dat we om vliegtuigen te zien, links om het veld heen moesten
rijden en dat we dan vanzelf op een plaats zouden komen waar dat kon. Toen we
dat deden kwamen we bij de hoofdpoort uit waar Alex eerst maar eens de bewaker
een sigaret ging aanbieden en vragen of we hier iets konden regelen. Toen de
bewaker hoorde dat we vliegtuigen kwamen kijken, deed hij de poort open en
gebaarde dat we door moesten rijden. Voor de moeite hebben we hem nog maar een
sigaret gegeven, waarna we het veld opreden. Eerst kwamen we langs een plek waar
3 wrakken van Su.15’s lagen, die zo te zien daar vernietigd werden. Een paar
honderd meter verder stonden we ineens op een platformpje waar 6 Su.15’s stonden
die zo te zien nog in redelijke staat verkeerden. Een dispersal verder stonden
er nog twee waarvan er een met de canopies open stond en zo te zien volledig
vliegwaardig (op weg naar Bila Cherkva misschien). Op dit platformpje werden we
al snel aangesproken door een meneer die ons duidelijk maakte dat dit toch niet
echt de bedoeling was en dat hij zijn baas ging roepen om te vragen wat ‘ie met
ons moest. De baas begon bij aankomst meteen over politie en arresteren, zodat
het ons verstandig leek ons van de domme te houden en te zeggen dat het van de
wachtmeneer mocht. De fototoestellen waren toen alweer opgeborgen en de filmpjes
zaten tussen de bekleding van de banken weggemoffeld, net als de notities, dus
wat kon ons gebeuren? Omdat hij blijkbaar ook geen zin had in alle rompslomp die
zo’n arrestatie met zich meebracht gebaarde hij dat we achter hem aan moesten
rijden naar de poort en dat we dan maar moesten gaan. Toen we wegreden zagen we
achter ons nog net dat de bewaker vreselijk op z’n lazer kreeg omdat hij ons had
doorgelaten.

Saturday, September 14th, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporashshya, Metitopol
Zaterdag ochtend op Dnepropetrovsk-Voloskoye het hek doorgeslopen en alle 13
MiG.25’s in de wielbakken gechecked of er nummertjes te vinden waren, hetgeen
bij 7 stuks het geval was. En passant nog even 4 MiG.23’s genomen en een stuk of
wat Let 39’s. De twee Su.15’s die hier in opslag staan hebben we vrij grondig
onderzocht, maar er stond echt niets op.

Melitopol is een mooi veld maar net iets ver te weg. Drie-en-een-half uur
lopen door de zuid-Ukraïnse kleefbagger leverde 25 opgeslagen Il.76’s op. Bij
iedere stap die je zet blijft er een klein laagje bagger aan je schoenzolen
hangen waardoor je na een meter of 10 klompvoeten van een kilootje of 5 per stuk
hebt. Dat loopt best vermoeiend, en het zou niet de laatste kleefbaggerwandeling
van deze trip zijn.

Monday, September 16th, Sevastopol, Bel’bek, Kacha, Yevpatoria
‘s Ochtends Sevastopol in een wolkbreuk bekeken en accoord bevonden. Toen we
na een paar koppen koffie terug kwamen bij de auto bleek dat Sevastopolenezen
eerlijke mensen zijn. Hans had de sleutel van de auto in de achterklep laten
zitten en er was niemand aan geweest. In het militair museum hadden ze alleen
raketten en torpedo’s, maar geen vliegtuigen dus dan maar op zoek naar
Khersones. Omdat dit puntje van de Krim tot voor kort verboden voor toeristen
was, is nog niet bekend wat hier te vinden is. En dat zal ook nog even zo
blijven, want wij konden het veld niet vinden. Wel vonden we een
DOSAAF-veldje.

Bij Bel’bek hadden we meer succes met de vliegtuigen dan met de auto. Toen
het stuur begon te schudden bleek dat er een onderdeel was afgebroken bij de
stabilisatorstang. Al schuddend zagen we hier wel 9 Su.15’s en 12 Su.27’s. De
vliegtuigen zijn het best te zien vanuit de wijngaarden ten noorden van het
veld.

Omdat het al laat werd hebben we stabilisatorstang maar even gelaten voor wat
‘ie was en zijn we doorgereden richting Yevpatoria. Omdat we in ieder geval
Yevpatoria wilden bereiken voor het donker werd, zouden we de velden onderweg
alleen in het voorbijrijden doen. Het eerste veld dat we tegenkwamen waar dat de
bedoeling was, was Kacha. Omdat we daar 10 Be.12’s en een hele horde Mi.14’s
zagen staan hebben we toch nog maar even iets beter gekeken. Helaas waren de
gele codes op lichtgrijze Mi.14’s maar beroerd te lezen.

Bij Saki hebben we het plan om geen tijd te verspillen wel waargemaakt omdat
daar op het eerste gezicht hooguit een paar helo’s te scoren vielen.De grasbaan
van Yevpatoria bracht ons aanmerkelijk meer dan je van een grasbaan zou
verwachten. Extra verrassing was dat Be.12’s het c/n er gewoon op hebben staan.
Ook zeer vet waren de 5 Yak.38’s hier. De meeste kisten zagen er niet echt
vliegwaardig meer uit.

In Krasnoparekopsk, dat zo’n beetje op de grens ligt tussen de Krim en het
vaste land, gegeten in het beste restaurant van de hele trip. Knipperende
kerstverlichting langs de ramen en een disk-jockey omlijstten het beste èn bijna
goedkoopste eten dat we tot dan toe hadden gezien.

De volgende ochtend in Cjurupyns’k eerst toch maar even de stabilisator laten
maken, hetgeen 15 minuten werk, 2 uur zoeken naar een onderdeel bij sloperijen
in de buurt en 20 hriven kostte.

Bij het volgende veld, Chernobayevka-Gusakovka, werden we aangehouden omdat
we op de “vluchtstrook” langs de weg Mi.6-en aan het bekijken waren.
Bij de nabijgelegen DAI-post moesten we wachten op de dingen die komen gingen.
Na ongeveer een kwartier werden we de weg op gedirigeerd, werden er 2
vrachtwagens van de weg geplukt en daartussenin moesten wij naar het hoofdbureau
geëscorteerd worden. In de achterste vrachtwagen ging een Militsija agentje mee
met onze autopapieren. Na bij het hoofdbureau nog eens tw8ee uur gewacht te
hebben kwam er eindelijk een man om onze paspoorten vragen. Daarna mochten we
binnen 5 minuten weer vertrekken, als we dat maar niet meer zouden doen. We zijn
voor de zekerheid maar niet weer gaan kijken toen we er op de terugweg weer
langskwamen.

De c/n’s van de An.2’s staan geen van alle in het russen-boek van Guus, maar
de opgezochte c/n’s zijn hier doorgerekende c/n’s met een zeer hoge
waarschijnlijkheid, bij de kisten waar geen c/n staat kon niet (veilig) worden
doorgerekend.Op het volgende veld ging het een stuk beter met de DAI, die hebben
we niet gezien. Wel zagen we op Nikolaev-Kulbakino veel Tu.22’s en een paar
Tu.16’s in stukken, en reed Rick het uitlaatspruitstuk in tweeën.

De Tu22M2’s met Ukraïns roundel zagen er zeer operationeel uit.Bij de
repairshop waar we toevallig voor de deur stonden werd eens meewarig met het
hoofd geschud en werd ons duidelijk gemaakt dat dit echt niet meer te repareren
was, en dat een nieuw onderdeel waarschijnlijk in deze contreien niet te vinden
was. Terwijl de mannen aan het werk gingen om onze uitlaat tenminste nog zo vast
te zetten dat we ermee naar de stad zouden kunnen rijden, arriveerde Sacha, de
baas van de garage, die bedacht dat ze de volgende ochtend toch zouden proberen
de auto te repareren. Eén van de monteurs heeft ons toen naar het duurste, en
slechtste, hotel van de trip gebracht met de belofte ons de volgende ochtend
tussen 8 en 9 weer op te halen. Het kostte $50,– voor een twee-persoons-kamer
en de douches/kranen/wc’s op de kamer gaven geen water. Dan eerst maar even eten
in het hotelrestaurant. We kregen hier lekkere crab-sticks, een inferieure
schnitzel en extreem gore shaslick voor maar liefst 115 hriven. Terug in het
hotel kwamen we na 3 keer van kamer verkast te zijn onder een zeer miezerig
straaltje koud water terecht. Toen we aan tandenpoetsen toe waren was het water
al weer op. Midden in de nacht bleek dat we de kranen en douche niet hadden
dichtgedraaid toen er plotseling weer water was. Het hotel had één voordeel: er
hing een grote stadsplattegrond met foto’s van de bezienswaardigheden van de
stad. Daarop hing ook een foto van een Il.18 die ergens in de stad als bioscoop
dienst deed. Ook stond er op dat er een MiG.17 preserved staat bij het civiele
vliegveld (ik meen mij te herinneren dat er een code ’01’ op stond).
Wednesday, September 18th, Mikolaev
De volgende ochtend tussen 8 en 9: geen monteur om ons op te halen.Tussen 9
en 10: geen monteur.Tussen 10 en 11 …… toen maar een taxi genomen naar de
garage waar bleek dat ze al met onze auto waren begonnen en dat het spruitstuk
al gedemonteerd was.Om de tijd te doden en misschien nog wat vliegtuigen te zien
zijn we toen maar een eindje gaan lopen in de richting van het veld. Deze
stevige wandeling (4 uur) leverde behoorlijk wat op.

Toen we terugkwamen hadden de heren het spruitstuk weer in elkaar gelast
(gietijzer lassen kan dus toch wel) en werd net begonnen met het weer in elkaar
zetten van de motor. Na verscheidene koppen koffie en knakworsten in de
aanpalende cafetaria was het werk gereed en kon er betaald worden. De prijs was
170 hriven totaal maar $100,– voldeed ook. Na het betalen moesten we nog even
een borreltje drinken met Sacha en Vladimir, de lokale politiechef. Ruim 2
flessen wodka, wat worst, vis, koekjes en een diepgaande conversatie met
Vladimir over de heilzame werking van wodka later, vertrokken we richting
Odessa. Maar niet voordat we in de stad Nikolaev gecontroleerd hadden of de
Il.18 van de plattegrond er inderdaad stond. Dat deed ‘ie, alleen was het nu een
bar en geen bioscoop meer. Hoewel we door alle vertraging niet meer op het
civiele vliegveld zijn gaan kijken, gaan we er vanuit dat die MiG.17 er dan ook
wel zal staan.

In Odessa had Rick eindelijk voor elkaar dat ‘ie ergens in mee kon vliegen.
Pas aan het eind van de onderhandelingen ($50,- voor 15 minuten Yak.52) kwamen
we erachter dat dit op z’n vroegst morgenochtend kon, en dat was uiteraard niet
mogelijk. Helaas dus.

De volgende verrassing van Adam Opel was een kromme remschijf rechtsvoor. Als
er iets te frequent of te hard werd geremd werd de schijf roodgloeiend en begon
het stuur te trekken. Maar niet zoveel meer remmen dan, en wat velden skippen om
zo snel mogelijk weer in de beschaafde wereld terecht te komen (Polen).

Friday, September 20th, Ternopol, Zolochiv, Rseszov (Poland)
Vandaag vanwege de toestand van de auto alleen op Ternopol gekeken en daar
met Valentin een vluchtje van 10 minuten met een Mi.2 gemaakt voor $36,-. Al
vliegend boven het centrum van Ternopol zagen we ineens een Tu.16 preserved
staan midden in een park die we later op de grond aan een nadere inspectie zijn
gaan onderwerpen. Zonder rondvlucht hadden we die nooit gevonden omdat ‘ie vanaf
de weg niet te zien is.

Onderweg naar de grens hebben we het veld bij L’viv nog wel in de verte zien
liggen maar in verband met de mogelijke wachttijd bij de grens zijn we maar niet
meer gaan kijken. Nadat we in het laatste Ukraïnse dorp nog wat hadden gegeten
(waarom staat hier nog geen rij), stonden we plotseling oog in oog met de eerste
douanier (nog steeds geen rij te bekennen dus) en reden we een uur later in
Polen. Via Rzezov, Krakow en Wroclaw zijn we toen min of meer als een streep
naar huis gereden.
